Habit
Gynomonoecious, cespitose, dwarf shrubs 8-20 cm tall; stems branched at base, densely glandular, somewhat resinous pilose or hispidulous.
Leaves
Leaves linear-oblanceolate or oblanceolate to spatulate, 10-25 mm long, 0.8-3 mm wide, densely glandular hispidulous, margins entire, apex obtuse, petiolate.
Flowers
Heads solitary or 5-7 in corymbose-paniculate inflorescences, peduncles 2-3.5 cm long, capitate glandular, bracts linear-subulate; involucre cylindrical, 7-9 mm high, 5-7 mm in diameter, bracts (22-)24-45, the inner ones often purple-tipped, linear or linear-lanceolate, densely capitate glandular or very sparsely strigose in subsp. humile, scarious hyaline-margined, narrowly so in outer bracts, entire or fimbriate at apex, acuminate; receptacle 1.2-1.4 mm in diameter; ray florets (13-)20-30(-36) per head, in a single series, rays white or tinged lavender, 2.9-3.3 mm long, 0.7-0.9 mm wide; disk florets perfect, 7-24 per head, corollas pink to purple, rarely yellow, tubular, 6.5-7.5 mm long, the tube 3-4 mm long; pappus dull yellowish brown, stout, 5.5-7(-8) mm long, longer than involucre.
Fruit
Achenes fusiform-cylindrical, 3.3-4(-4.5) mm long, 0.7-0.8 mm wide, densely glandular and strigose, some glands large and globose, containing a resinous substance, faces obscurely 1-nerved basally or nerveless.
