Habit
Shrubs or small trees 1.5-6 m tall; stems usually sharply angled or winged, the old wings often undulate, irregularly many-branched, young branches short-hirtellous or sometimes (Kaua`i) glabrous.
Leaves
Leaves green and glossy on upper surface, lower surface pale green, membranous to chartaceous, elliptic to broadly elliptic or broadly oblong-elliptic, sometimes obovate or narrowly elliptic (Kaua`i), (4.5-)6-19 cm long, 1.5-8.6 cm wide, upper surface glabrous, lower surface moderately to sparsely short-hispid or sometimes (Kaua`i) glabrous, apex short-acuminate, base cuneate, petioles 0.7-2.7 cm long, stipules membranous, connate into a cup 2-6(-8) mm long, adnate to petiole in lower 1/3 to nearly throughout, deciduous.
Flowers
Flowers (3-)6-25(-50) in compound or sometimes simple, open or congested, sessile, paniculate cymes, densely short-hispidulous to glabrous throughout, pedicels 5-16 mm long, usually reflexed, bracts linear-spatulate to linear, 8-10 mm long, bracteoles linear-filiform, 4-6 mm long; calyx lobes slightly unequal, deltate-subulate to linear-deltate, linear-lanceolate, or narrowly lanceolate, 3-10 mm long, 0.8-2(-2.5) mm wide, veins obscure, hispidulous except on margins or glabrous throughout; corolla greenish yellow, pale orange or yellow, or rarely cream, narrowly urceolate, flaring at mouth, (11-)14-23(-28) mm long, the tube 7-15(-18) mm long, sparsely to moderately hirtellous, the lobes linear-deltate, (4-)5-8.5(-10) mm long, usually strongly reflexed; ovary densely hirsute in upper part or sometimes (Kaua`i) glabrous.
Fruit
Capsules ellipsoid, ellipsoid-oblanceoloid, or occasionally obovoid, usually somewhat compressed, 15-34 mm long, 8-15(-22) mm in diameter, 2-3-valved, valves not keeled or keel less than 1 mm wide, apex with a beak (1.5-)2.5-6 mm long.
Seeds
Seeds reddish brown, ca. 2.5 mm long.
