General Information
DistributionNative from southern United States to Argentina and the West Indies, naturalized in the Paleotropics.In the Hawaiian Islands, naturalized on Midway, Kaua`i, O`ahu, Moloka`i, Lana`i, Maui, Kaho`olawe, Hawai`i.
















Habit
Glabrous annual herbs; stems red or green, erect or ascending, 0.15-0.6 m long.
Leaves
Leaves membranous, oblong to linear-oblong, 8-30 mm long, 4-12 mm wide, veins conspicuous, lower surface glabrous to sparsely pilose, margins serrate, apex rounded or obtuse, base rounded to subcordate, petioles 1-1.5 mm long, stipules ± connate, deltate, 0.5-1 mm long, ciliate.
Flowers
Cyathia in terminal or lateral, leafy, few-flowered cymes; involucre 0.8-1 mm high, glabrous, glands oblong to broadly reniform, 0.1-0.3 mm long, appendages white to pinkish, shorter or up to twice as long as the gland is wide, margins entire; male flowers 4-15 per cyathium.
Fruit
Capsules ovoid-deltoid, 1.5-2 mm high, 1.6-2 mm in diameter, usually broadest below middle, glabrous.
Seeds
Seeds black or gray, ovoid, 4-angled, 1-1.4 mm long, the faces with 3-4 transverse ridges.
