Habit
Annual or sometimes perennial herb, <6 dm tall, often branched near base or unbranched, densely pubescent.
Leaves
Leaves numerous, linear to lanceolate, usually grayish green, proximal ones to 15 cm long, 2 cm wide, becoming progressively smaller upward, usually 3‒6 cm long, <0.4 cm wide, coarsely serrate, sessile.
Flowers
Inflorescence spiciform with short side branches. Heads usually numerous; involucre 4‒6 mm high, phyllaries rather densely hispid-hirsute, with broad-based hairs; ray florets 50‒200 or more per head, pistillate, rays ca. 0.5 mm long; pappus yellowish brown to reddish, in a single series, usually shorter than or equaling the disk florets.
