Habit
Shrubs 1-3(-5) m tall; stems unbranched to few-branched.
Leaves
Leaves in whorls of 3-6, but usually 4, per node, rarely opposite, closely spaced, borne on upper 3-9 nodes, those at a node equal or unequal, symmetrical, thick or rarely thin, chartaceous to subcoriaceous, elliptic-oblanceolate to narrowly oblanceolate or occasionally narrowly elliptic, (8-)12-30(-57) cm long, (1.3-)3-8(-14.5) cm wide, upper surface with veins slightly impressed, glabrate except occasionally midrib sparsely to moderately pilose, lower surface with veins raised, glabrate except veins sparsely to densely shaggy brown pilose, on O`ahu lower surface of younger leaves often moderately to densely shaggy pilose especially on veins, rarely persisting on older leaves, margins serrulate, the teeth often widely spaced, apex long-acuminate, occasionally acuminate, or rarely acute, base long-attenuate, petioles 0-5.5 cm long, often winged, occasionally broadly so.
Flowers
Flowers 1-5 in usually dense, often compound cymes arising in the leaf axils or on the few nodes below the leaves, moderately to densely shaggy brown pilose throughout, rarely sparsely so, peduncles 1-4 mm long, pedicels 1-8 mm long, becoming reflexed, sometimes elongating to 10-15 mm long in fruit, bracts linear-lanceolate to lanceolate, (4-)10-35 mm long, ± connate 1/2 their length, each one sometimes 2-lobed, usually deciduous after anthesis; calyx zygomorphic, fusiform in bud, tipped by a beak 3-17 mm long, 15-48 mm long in anthesis, deciduous after anthesis, tube 12-25 mm long, sparsely to very densely shaggy brown pilose, densely or rarely sparsely appressed dark brown pilose within, splitting only along 1 suture, the lobes persistently coherent or separating by or shortly after anthesis, usually the lower 2 first, lobes 7-30 mm long; corolla white, tube narrowly funnelform, curved near middle, 14-27 mm long, ca. 4-6 mm in diameter medially, glabrous to sparsely pilose, upper lobes broadly ovate, 5-11 mm long, 5-10(-13) mm wide, lower lobes broadly elliptic, 7-12 mm long, 6-10 mm wide; ovary glabrous; style 7-12 mm long, glabrous or occasionally sparsely pilose.
Fruit
Berries white, oblong-ellipsoid, 2-3.8 cm long.
Seeds
Seeds 0.3-0.4 mm long.
