Note: Where did "Pu`ukukui, in bog" part of locality info come from? I have looked at both BISH isotypes, the publication, and Mann's field notes, and it's not in any of them (RKS, 1/95).

Hawai`i, Kohala Mts., in thick moss on trees in boggy ground and near summit in open swampy places. 4600 to 5200 m. 21 June 1910. Rock 8385.

[BISH! [4], US]. Lectotypified in H. St. John. Bot Jahrb. Syst. 111: 179. 1989.
Note: St. John separated two sheets out from Rock's 8385, renumbered them 8385A (see St. John, p. 179), and used them as the type for his V. rockii. St. John took Rock's comment (p. 5) that the blue-flowered and white-flowered plants occurred at different elevations to indicate that 8385 was a mixed collection, and used that as the basis for the separation and renumbering (adding an "A") of the sheets. Rock's field notes do not indicate that any plants were collected lower than 5200 ft.
