Note: Also published as a sp. nov. in U.S. Expl. Exped., Phan. 652, 1854. The material used by A. Gray in descriptions of S. cucumerinus and the unnamed beta and gamma varieties was mounted on two sheets. Gray's species description is of the sheet taken as the holotype, with short descriptions of the two additional taxa given afterward. They are both mounted on US-48018! The specimen of var. beta is of S. alba (St. John) Telford and that of var. gamma is a lobed-leaf form of S. cucumerinus.
