Note: Hillebrand cited three elements in his protologue: "Gulches back of Lahaina and Oloalu (a form with narrow linear leaves of thicker texture, with revolute margins the two lowest veins running parallel with the midrib and rather prominent), Ma`alaea." Two Hillebrand specimens from Lahaina are represented by photographs at BISH and F; the F photograph is a fragment at BISH-46607! from B. The BISH photograph is apparently of one of the B syntypes, although there is no label information visible in the photograph. The sole extant collection (at BISH) is from M `alaea, which we here choose as the lectotype. Hillebrand described the Lahaina and Oloalu collections as having narrower leaves, which is borne out in the photos of the Lahaina collection, and were suggested by Sherff to perhaps be varietally distinct (Brittonia 5: 323, 1945); these may in fact represent hybrids with S. menziesii (see below). Recent published references to S. salicaria (Sakai et al., 1989; Weller et al., 1990; Weller and Sakai, 1990; Weller and Sakai, 1991) refer to populations near M `alaea with variation similar to the lectotype
