Note: Hillebrand cited five of his collections in the protologue. He listed the first three as "East and West Maui! Hamakua, Waihe`e, Ka`anapali," followed by one more each under unnamed beta (Moloka`i) and gamma (O`ahu, Mt. Ka`ala) varieties. Of these, we have seen the following: 1) West Maui, Waihe`e, Aug. 1870, Hillebrand s.n. [Photo of B sheet (now destroyed), BISH]; 2) West Maui, Ka`anapali, Aug. 1870, Hillebrand s.n. [MEL 2 sheets]; 3) East Maui, Hamakua [presumably above Hamakua Poko], [BISH]; 4) Moloka`i, Kala`e, 1870, Hillebrand s.n. [B (now destroyed) photo BISH, BM, F, GH photos F [2]); 5) O`ahu, Wai`anae Mts., July 1860, Hillebrand 430 [B (now destroyed) Photo BISH, BISH, US]. Sherff (Brittonia 5:317. 1945) selected the Hamakua Hillebrand collection as the lectotype as it was listed first, but without actually seeing the specimen at B. Because this collection was destroyed in World War II we here make a new lectotypification. Sherff (Amer. J. Bot.30: 607. 1943) gave names to the beta and gamma varieties of Hillebrand, but they were not validly published as he provided no Latin diagnosis. The gamma of O`ahu has now been described as S. pentandra. The best extant material with the most duplicates is the Moloka`i collection
