Note: Syntypes: "Hawaii and Maui." [U. S. Expl. Exped.] "Also collected by Menzies, Chaamisso? and Remy." Sherff (Field Mus. Nat. Hist., Bot. Ser. 16: 15. 1937) cited the U. S. Expl. Exped. sheet from Hawaii as the type (he did not cite an institution, but there is a sheet of this collection at US), but seems not to have actually seen it; apparently he only saw the U. S. Expl. Exped. sheet from Maui at US. This species is currently considered to consist of two subspecies, and lectotypification should be on Maui material to preserve usage.
