Viola rockii H. St. John , Bot. Jahrb. Syst. 111: 190. 1989.
Type information:
Holotype [BISH]. J. F. Rock 8385A. 21 June 1910. Hawai`i: Kohala Mts., near the summit, in open, swampy places.5200ft. Isotype(s) [BISH!].

Note: Collection date published erroneously as June 2, 1910; holotype sheet has no date, collection number, or locality. St. John wrote on the sheet "Probably also from Kohala Mts. Hawaii, probl. Rock 8385A." St. John separated two sheets out from Rock's 8385, renumbered them 8385A (see St. John, p. 179), and used them as the type for his V. rockii. St. John took Rock's comment (p. 5) that the blue-flowered and white-flowered plants occurred at different elevations to indicate that 8385 was a mixed collection, and used that as the basis for the separation and renumbering (adding an "A") of the sheets. Rock's field notes do not indicate that any plants were collected lower than 5200 ft.
