Schiedea diffusa A. Gray , U. S. Expl. Exped., Phan. 138. 1854.
Type information:
Lectotype [US]. U. S. Expl. Exped. s.n.. 1841. Maui: "mountains of the west side of the island.".
Lectotypified in Sherff. Brittonia 5: 315. 1945.

Note: Gray mentioned several localities in the protologue: "Sandwich Islands; in the forests of Mouna Loa and Mouna Kea. Also in mountains of the west side of the island of Maui." Sherff (Brittonia 5: 315. 1945) indicated the US sheet as the type without seeing it and cited Gray's from protologue for the locality as "forests of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa." St. John, (1987) took this as a lectotypification. However, there is no U. S. Exploring Expedition specimen at US to our knowledge from the island of Hawai`i. The lectotype is the only US sheet to our knowledge and the one used for the plate in the Atlas. The other three Exploring Expedition collections (GH!, NY!. P!) have no specific locality on the label and since Gray mentions several localities we can not determine if these are duplicates of the Maui collection or ones from Hawai`i
