Note: Also published as "sp. nov." in U. S. Expl. Exped., Phan. 343. 1854. Gray did not cite any localities in the original publication, but cited four localities in the Phanerogamia. Additional syntypes: Hawai`i, Mauna Kea, margins of Bullock Plains, forest; Kaua`i ? (foliage only); O`ahu, mts behind Honolulu.
