Holotype [BISH]. J. F. Rock 8665. November 1910. Maui: East Maui, slopes of Haleakala, lava fields of Auwahi and Kahikinui.3000ft.

Note: Fosberg clearly considered Rock 8665 to be a mixed collection, and added "a" to the sheet he designated as the type of this name. St. John's 1986 lectotypification (Phytologia 59: 392) is superfluous. Published simultaneously at the rank of variety.
