DistributionIn the Hawaiian Islands, endemic to Kaua`i, O`ahu, Moloka`i, Lana`i, Maui.

Habit
Monoecious or apparently sometimes dioecious shrubs 0.3-1(-3) m tall; stems erect or, when more than 1 m long, usually scandent, branching nonphyllanthoid, main stem leafy and bearing flowers.
Leaves
Leaves distichous, variable in shape, lanceolate to elliptic, sometimes ovate or broadly elliptic, (9-)15-65(-85) mm long, (5-)10-30(-34) mm wide, glabrous or with a few widely scattered hairs, apex acute to rounded, base rounded or sometimes slightly cordate, petioles 0-3(-4) mm long, stipules cordate, 1-2 mm long, deciduous.
Flowers
Staminate flowers in dense, axillary, bracteate cymes, pedicels 2-4 mm long, calyx lobes 6, ca. 1-1.3 mm long, nectary disk 6-lobed, stamens 3, filaments distinct; pistillate flowers few or solitary in the leaf axils, sometimes surrounded by staminate flowers, pedicels 4-12 mm long, calyx 6-lobed, ca. 3 mm long, nectary disk circular, scarcely lobed, styles distinct, deeply bifid.
Fruit
Capsules green to brown, depressed-globose, 3-3.5 mm in diameter, explosively dehiscent.
Seeds
Seeds angled, ca. 1 mm long.
