Habit
Trees 3-11 m tall, new growth densely yellowish brown appressed hirtellous, ± becoming glabrate.
Leaves
Leaves opposite, coriaceous, elliptic, oblong-elliptic, oblong-ovate, elliptic-ovate, or oblong-obovate, 3-18(-25) cm long, 1.5-8(-14.5) cm wide, primary lateral veins prominent, usually 10-20 pairs, ascending, connected by an arched vein 1-5 mm from margin, upper surface glabrous or midrib short-hirtellous, lower surface ± sparsely short-hirtellous, often becoming glabrate, midrib sparsely to densely short-hirtellous, sometimes puberulent or glabrate, apex rounded to obtuse and sometimes emarginate, or sometimes acute and minutely acuminate, base cuneate or rounded and ± weakly emarginate, petioles 7-56 mm long, but at least some of them more than 10 mm long, short-hirtellous to glabrate.
Flowers
Flowers 1-5(-11) in hirtellous to sparsely or densely puberulent or glabrate, axillary cymes up to 6 cm long, peduncles 7-38 mm long, pedicels 5-20 mm long, slightly clavate just below calyx, bracteoles 1-5 mm long, minutely puberulent; staminate flowers with sepals deltate, 2.5-4 mm long, puberulent, often densely so, petals narrowly deltate, 6-8 mm long, puberulent or glabrous, ovary densely yellowish brown tomentulose, style ca. 1.2 mm long, short-hirtellous; pistillate flowers with sepals ovate, 2.5-3 mm long, puberulent, petals deltate, ca. 6 mm long, puberulent or glabrous, ovary densely yellowish brown tomentellous, style 2.5-3 mm long, short-hirtellous.
Fruit
Capsules (16-)25-40(-50) mm wide, carpels connate 1/4-1/3 their length, (8-)12-24 mm long, straight or somewhat reflexed, exocarp finely puberulent, especially around base, sometimes nearly glabrate, endocarp glabrous or sparsely puberulent, usually only near suture.
Seeds
Seeds usually 2 per carpel, 6-9 mm long.
