Habit
Lianas or, when young, scandent shrubs; branches widely spreading, covered with prominent, slightly raised lenticels.
Leaves
Leaves membranous, thin or occasionally somewhat thickened, obovate to elliptic or rarely suborbicular, 3.5-19 cm long, those more than 14 cm long probably on young growth, 1.4-9.8 cm wide, reticulate veined, midrib and lateral veins more prominent and often red, glabrous or rarely pubescent, conspicuously punctate, margins entire, occasionally wavy crenate on young growth, apex rounded or occasionally bluntly acuminate, base cuneate, petioles 4-10 mm long.
Flowers
Flowers in axillary, racemose inflorescences 15-45(-60) mm long, glabrous or occasionally glandular puberulent, rarely reddish pubescent with multicellular hairs, pedicels 5-6 mm long, bracteolate at base; calyx 4-5 lobed, cleft nearly to base or sepals up to slightly over 1/3 connate, the lobes ovate, ca. 1 mm long, glabrous, rarely reddish pubescent with multicellular hairs; petals 4-5, greenish, distinct, ca. 3-4 mm long, densely punctate; stamens slightly more than 1/2 as long as petals; ovary with 3 ovules; stigma capitate.
Fruit
Drupes dark purple, depressed globose, 7-11 mm in diameter.
