DistributionNative to central and southwestern United States.In the Hawaiian Islands, naturalized on Lana`i, Maui, Hawai`i.
















Habit
Clumped perennial herbs 2-7 dm tall, villous or sometimes glabrous.
Leaves
Leaves simple, clustered toward base, spatulate to linear or linear-lanceolate, usually 5-20 cm long, 0.5-2 cm wide, with 1-2 pairs of entire-margined lateral lobes or margins entire, the lower ones petiolate, becoming sessile above.
Flowers
Heads few, on long naked peduncles usually 2-4 dm long; outer involucral bracts lanceolate, 5-10 mm long, margins scarious and ciliate; chaffy bracts attenuate; rays yellow, 1.5-3 cm long; disk corollas yellow, usually 5-lobed; pappus of 2 short scales.
Fruit
Achenes 2-3(-4) mm long, margins with thin, flat wings.
