Habit
Terrestrial shrubs or trees 2-7 m tall.
Leaves
Leaves oblong, elliptic, or lanceolate, blades 7-19 cm long, 2-5 cm wide, upper surface dark green, glossy, glabrous, lower surface whitish green, glabrous or pubescent, margins callose-crenulate, apex obtuse, acute, or acuminate, base cuneate to attenuate, petioles 1.8-11.5 cm long.
Flowers
Inflorescences 2(3)-flowered, peduncles spreading, 5-45 mm long, pedicels 10-45 mm long; hypanthium hemispherical to obconical, 10-13 mm long, 10-13 mm wide; perianth greenish white or purplish externally, white or cream within, arcuate, distinctly tubular, 50-65 mm long, 10-13 mm wide, glabrous, the lobes (except the dorsal) erect or spreading slightly, 1/4-1/3 as long as the tube; staminal column white or purple, glabrous; anthers white or purple, glabrous or sparsely pubescent.
Fruit
Berries orange, subglobose, 17-30 mm long.
Chromosomes
2n = 28*; the count of 2n = 22* (Carlquist, 1956) is probably an error.
