Habit
Erect, sparingly branched shrubs 0.8-4 m tall.
Leaves
Leaves bipinnately divided into long linear divisions, usually 4-26 cm long including petiole, ultimate divisions linear or filiform, 0.2-11 cm long, 0.1-0.45 cm wide, glabrous or pubescent, margins usually entire.
Flowers
Heads more than 40 in dense, many-branched, compound cymes terminating main stem and lateral branches, (1.5-)2-3.5 cm in diameter including ray florets, peduncles 0.3-2 cm long, glabrous or pubescent; outer involucral bracts 1-2.5 mm long (sometimes longer on plants from Moloka`i), the inner ones distinct; ray florets 4-5 per head, sterile, rays yellow, 12-24 mm long, 5-6 mm wide; disk florets (5)6-8(-16) per head, perfect or female(and then plants gynodioecious), corollas yellow; pappus of 2 awns less than 1 mm long or absent.
Fruit
Achenes grayish black, straight, wingless or very rarely winged, 9-12 mm long, 1-1.5 mm wide, glabrous.
