Leaves simple, alternate, linear, appearing grass-like, margins entire.

Flowers
|
Heads solitary, terminating the branches, florets all of ray type; involucre cylindrical or campanulate, the bracts in a single equal series; receptacle naked; ray florets perfect and fertile, rays yellow or purple, 5-toothed; pappus of plumose bristles.

Fruit
|
Achenes cylindrical, rounded or angled, 5-10-nerved, terminating in a slender beak or sometimes the outermost achenes beakless.
