Leaves linear to lanceolate.
Flowers
Flowers perfect, slightly zygomorphic, nodding, 1-10 in terminal umbels on hollow, leafless scapes, each one subtended by a spathe; perianth connate into a short or long tube, with a corona of small scales between the filaments; stamens 6, inserted just below top of perianth tube, unequal, of 4 different lengths; ovary inferior; stigma 3-lobed.
Fruit
Fruit a globose or ellipsoid, loculicidal capsule.
Seeds
Seeds few to numerous, black, disk-shaped and winged or subglobose and ± angular.
