General Information
DistributionAn endemic genus of 9 species.
Habit
Terrestrial, branched or unbranched shrubs or trees, rarely palm-like or subherbaceous, unarmed.
Leaves
Leaves toothed or irregularly laciniate, petiolate.
Flowers
Flowers 5-20 in axillary racemes; hypanthium ovoid, ellipsoid, cylindrical, or rarely campanulate; calyx lobes subulate to triangular, shorter than the hypanthium; corolla zygomorphic, white or greenish white, rarely suffused or striped with purple or blue, suberect to strongly curved, dorsally cleft to about the middle, with a small knob at the terminus of the cleft, sometimes with 2 additional lateral knobs, glabrous or rarely pubescent; stamens connate; lower 2 anthers with apical tufts of white hairs; ovary inferior, 2-celled; stigma 2-lobed.
Fruit
Fruit a purple berry.
Seeds
Seeds white, dull, transversely rugose, 0.7-1.5 mm long.
