Habit
Lianas or sometimes creeping perennial herbs with tuberous roots.
Leaves
Leaves simple, somewhat fleshy, margins dentate, with leaf-opposed tendrils.
Flowers
Flowers 4-merous, in leaf-opposed, umbellate cymes; calyx subtruncate; petals distinct, apex hooded; nectary disk cupular, 4-lobed, adnate to base of ovary, margins thickened; stigma small.
Fruit
Berries globose or obovoid.
Seeds
Seeds 1(2).
